Aging Barrels Help DSB Fan Win Big

A home brewing aficionado since January 2014, Scott Cromeens of Fort Worth, Texas loves to testify to the quality and flavor difference of barrel-aging beverages. In September of 2014, he entered the Rhymes and Vines Home Brew contest in Stephenville, Texas, part of the Rhymes and Vines Music Festival. Not only did Scott win in the category of “Best Malty Flavored Beer,” but he almost won overall champion, missing out by a narrow 2-point margin.

Scott’s Winning Flavor Combination

To take home top honors in his category, Scott entered his Barrel-Aged Vanilla Honey Porter, aged for three months in a 5L barrel. He attributes the delicious flavor of the beverage to, “the quality of ingredients that I purchased from my local home brew shop, Stubby’s Texas Brewing, Inc., a lot of patience, and the quality of the barrel that I bought from Deep South Barrels last year at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo.” Pictured below: Scott's aging barrel display at home to the left, and a four-legged family member gets in on the DSB fun!

The DSB Difference

“My favorite thing about Deep South Barrels is the quality that goes into the product, the attention to customers, and the passion for what they are selling,” Scott says. “They take the time to talk to their customers, whether in the booth or at the store. Great product, excellent customer service, and a fair price.” Scott currently utilizes a 1L and a 5L oak barrel to age his brews, and hopes to pick up some 20L barrels from DSB in the near future. Next on the horizon for Scott: aging a Pumpkin Belgian Dubbel, which he first made for Thanksgiving last year. “It turned out wonderful on its own,” Scott says, “but a good five-month age should make all the difference.”

Thanks for the feedback, Scott! If you have a story about how you have used your aging barrels from DSB, send an email to [email protected], include your name and how we can contact you. Added by Christina on February 17, 2015.
